Cardiovascular Endurance

Wellness and Fitness class

Over my years at STEM one of the things I have always struggled with in wellness and fitness class has been fitness days. Whenever we would play a game that requires a lot of moving I would become short of breath. I would have to stop playing and get a drink of water to regain the energy I lost while I was moving around quickly trying to play the game to the best of my ability. But this year in 8th grade during the beginning of the year we did a project, called the 28 day challenge. Before I start talking about this project I want to mention my claim. My claim is that I grew in cardiovascular endurance during my 8th grade year.

My first artifact is my best mile time in the 28 day challenge, which was 7:40. The 28 day challenge was a booklet that we would put exercise data in to keep track of our exercises. We chose exercises based off 3 choices: upper body muscular strength, abdominal strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Before I tell you what I chose let me explain what all 3 of them mean. Muscular strength the limit that your biceps, triceps, and forearms have when they are faced with resistance. Abdominal strength is the limit that your abdominal muscles have against resistance. Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to your body. The faster and more efficiently your heart can do this the lower your heart rate will be. Cardiovascular endurance was what I chose for this challenge. My plan was to run 0.5 miles for 2 days, and then slowly increase to 1 mile. I chose cardiovascular endurance because in order for me to make the West Carrolton high school soccer team. To make the team I have to run a mile in under 7:00. Since my mile time was 8:49, I felt the need to improve upon that to have a shot at hitting that target. At the very end of the 28 day challenge I went for a run and rolled my ankle pretty bad and was not able to complete the 28 day challenge. But the fastest mile I ever ran was 7:40. Even though I didn’t reach my goal of 7:00 minutes I cut off a minute of my time. That was a major improvement for me.

My 2nd artifact is the rates of my time for different distances, 7:52/1 is my rate when I ran ½ mile. 1 means 1 mile and 7:52 is my 0.5 mile distance time multiplied by 2. My fastest mile time rate would be 7:40/1. Even though as you run farther you slowly slow down until you can’t go anymore. These to rates come from the part of the 28 day challenge where we were doing our exercises. These 2 rates side by side definitely show growth because my mile rate is better than my ½ mile rate. This shows growth because as I said earlier as you run for a longer time, you get a little bit slower until you have to stop. But in this case I got faster which says that I had to have grown to beat my ½ mile time. Some terms that I learned while doing the 28 day challenge were, target heart rate which means a range of heart rates that a person sets for themselves before beginning an exercise. Power walk which is a walk where you walk really fast to keep your heart rate up (A.K.A. speed walk). Aerobic exercise which is an exercise that is easy enough that it allows your heart to pump enough oxygen to your muscles. I hope you have enjoyed reading about my evidence for my growth claim. I hope that I have given you enough information to convince you of my growth in fitness class.

So what, who cares about these artifacts? How do these show growth? Well the first artifact I presented was a comparison of my mile time before the 28 day challenge and my best mile time during the 28 day challenge. There is a difference of about 1:09, this shows growth because in order for me to be able to go further, faster, I had to have grown in cardiovascular endurance. My second artifact was a comparison of my ½ mile time rate and my mile time. There is a difference of 0:12, with my fastest mile time leading. This has to show growth because endurance literally means your ability to sustain something for a long period of time. As time goes on you get even more tired. But in this instance I was able to go at a faster pace than before. That has to show growth because my endurance was greater than before, which shows that I grew in cardiovascular endurance. So what if you grew in cardiovascular endurance? To refresh your memory my claim was that I grew in cardiovascular endurance. All of my artifacts had to do with cardiovascular endurance, so they all link back to the claim. While at STEM or anywhere else I need to nurture this skill and master it in order to achieve my ultimate goal, becoming a professional soccer player.
